I alluded to in a previous post that maybe John Smith (Short) could be deceased as early as 1793.
Scanning through the Record of Estates Johnston County, North Carolina Vol. I – V 1781 – 1807, the following is found

So it appears that John Smith (short) is alive as late as August 1801.
