Nehemiah Smith, in the papers!

While searching through newspaper’s from Georgia, I stumbled upon some articles about Nehemiah that I thought I would post as a record for future research.

The 1810 snippet is from the Georgia Argus dtd 13 February 1810 and the second snippet is from The Georgia Journal dtd 13 April 1814.

What I didn’t realize when I was writing the initial Nehemiah post was the proximity of Hancock and Washington. Portions of Hancock were created from Washington County in 1793.

This puts Nehemiah in close proximity to Job Smith, Hardy Smith, and William Smith of Washington County, GA. All of these Smith’s are believed to have come from Johnston/Cumberland County, NC.

I found a land warrant for a Nehemiah Smith (Head Right) dated 1786. Assuming he received a tract of land off this warrant, was it land in that part of Washington County that was used to create Hancock County in 1793. More research is definitely needed {{property was on Little Ogeechee River, likely between Sparta, GA and Hamburg State Park across the line in Washington County}}.

Another data point to jot down for the future comes from the Record of Estates Johnston County, North Carolina Vol. I – V 1781 – 1807

“8. Sale of Est. of Elisha Moore, dec. 16 Oct. 1781, Kedar Powell, Shff. Lewis Moore Exec. Buyers – Charles Parish, Sarah Moore, Wm Sanders, Kedar Powell, Lewis Moore, Britian Carrell, James Norris, Nehemiah Smith.”
