Nehemiah Smith

While working on some other patents/deeds, I came across a Smith that I wasn’t familiar with, Nehemiah Smith.

This person appears to fall into the same category as my Hardy Smith. A Smith descendant from either John or Samuel Smith or more likely one of their children. Of note Nehemiah had son’s named William, Britain, Gideon, and Samuel. Three of which are names of sons of John Smith Jr. Is Nehemiah a son of John Smith Jr?

Below is information that I have found on Nehemiah, which I will use as a record placeholder for future research.

  1. Nehemiah Smith was a solider for North Carolina and in 1778 received military pay. (The State Records of North Carolina, Vol 17 page 250/251); also Vol 16 Nehemiah is listed with the rank of ‘musc’ or Musician. He was a Musician under Capt John Baker, 3rd NC Regiment for 9 months.
  2. Nehemiah Smith married Lurana Avera, bond date, 9 January 1787 Johnston County. Bondsman Nahor Norris, Witness R Sanders (suspect Reuben) / (NC County Registers of Deeds. Microfilm. Record Group 048. NC State Archives, Raliegh, NC).
  3. State Census of NC 1784 – 1787 – Nehemiah Smith of Johnston County, 1M21-60, 1F.
  4. (JOCO BK:Transcript3/PG:26) (This 150A tract is made up of land from two patents granted to Richard Willoughby (400A 1778 & 300A 1779). Also of note, this property is within walking distance to John Smith Sr and John Smith Jr’s properties.
